Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The biological behavior of intracranial tumors is associated with the main histopathological characteristics of neoplastic tissue and refers to the presence of mitosis, vascular proliferation, hyperhromasia sails and necrosis. The proliferation of tumor cells can be quantitatively assessed by measuring Ki-67 proliferative (lebeling) index. Various studies have shown the existence of a significant correlation between Ki-67 proliferation index and the biological behavior of intracranial tumor, its grade, tendencies to recurrence and recidive. HYPOTHESIS: High Ki-67 proliferative index indicates a tendency for recurrence and recidive of radically resected intracranial tumors. METHODS AND MATERIALS: This study enrolled 40 cases of intracranial tumours which include the benign extrinsic intracranial tumors and malignant intrinsic intracranial tumours. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed for staining of biopsies. Pearson’s chi square test was used to determine statistical correlation between Ki-67 and recurrence and survival of tumour. RESULTS: We found a statistically significant correlation between the biological behavior of intracranial tumors and Ki67 index, and we determined that the high percentage of Ki-67 index in malignant neoplasms can be grounds for anticipation of their postoperative index.
